Our team is composed primarily of international students studying in Canada.

Principal Investigator

Russell Butler

Dr. Butler received his Ph.D. from the University of Sherbrooke in 2019 under the supervision of Dr. Kevin Whittingstall. link to thesis. His research focuses primarily on neurovascular coupling using non-invasive brain imaging techniques such as MRI and EEG.  He is currently an Associate Professor at Bishops and Chair of the Computer Science Department. Funded by the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI). link to citations.

Graduate student

Raana Nouri

Raana Nouri, who specializes in human action decoding analysis using neurophysiological time series, just earned her Master's degree in computer science from Bishop's University. In order to interpret EEG signals, her research combines machine learning, Python programming, and sophisticated data processing with MNE. Raana has a wealth of professional experience as an ERP Business Analyst and Consultant in addition to her academic work. She is a business analyst  and  committed to using data-driven insights and creative solutions to close the gap between technology and business requirements.

Fabio Cozzuto

Fabio earned a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and worked for six years in Technology as a programmer and team leader. He is currently an MSc student in Computer Science at Bishop’s University under the supervision of Dr. Butler. His research explores long-term memory for large language models in video games, where he develops memory architectures and retrieval strategies to produce more coherent, context-aware NPC behaviour and narrative systems. An aspiring video game designer, Fabio is an active participant in game jams and volunteers with Gameable to teach game design to youth.

Abass Zakari

Abass graduated with a BSc Computer Science (Hons) from All Nations University in Ghana. He furthered his studies at Bishop's University graduating with an MSc Computer Science. Abass is enthusiastic about research. His project focused on designing a deep learning framework to investigate neuronal affect from non-invasive EEG data. He is the winner of the local 3-MT competition (2025). He was also recognized with other awards for his contributions in community building at Bishop's.

Sanaz Ghaffari

Sanaz holds a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology from Iran. She is currently pursuing her MSc in Computer Science at Bishop’s University, Canada. Her Master’s research, entitled “Distinct Spatial and Functional Dynamics for Alpha and Gamma Oscillations in Human Visual Cortex,” uses EEG to investigate how the human brain processes visual information.

Amin Miri

Amin Miri is a passionate Software Engineer based in Sherbrooke, QC, with strong experience in back-end development using Django, FastAPI, and REST frameworks. He has contributed to multiple companies, including Tabdeal, TEXOOM, ReVision Studio, and Nilva, building scalable, secure, and efficient systems. During a focused academic break, he strengthened his foundation in data science and machine learning while preparing for advanced studies in computer science. Amin is driven by a commitment to continuous learning and innovation. His current project explores decoding brain waves using novel deep learning architectures, bridging software engineering expertise with cutting-edge neuroscience applications.

Haoqing Hu

Haoqing holds a B.Sc. in Computer Science from Beijing Union University and is completing his M.Sc. at Bishop’s University. His interests span blockchain systems, smart-contract development, and real-time game design, with an emphasis on latency-aware, auditable applications. His thesis project, Heroes Arena, prototypes a responsive fully on-chain card-battle game on Ethereum using a local-first, deferred-commit architecture.

Sara Bonyadian

I earned my Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Ale-Taha University in Tehran and am currently completing a Master's in Computer Science at Bishop's University. My research focuses on examining how two high-intensity interval training (HIIT) protocols influence brain activity (EEG) and cardiovascular responses in untrained female participants.

Steven Poulin

Steven completed his undergraduate degree at Bishops and is currently working on his MSc. under the supervision of Dr. Butler and Dr. Bruno Courtemanche. His project involves navigating a submersible drone in the lakes of the Eastern Townships to acquire photographic data on invasive species, and then applying convolutional neural networks to the dataset in order to automatically detect images containing invasive species.

Ahmad Bahmani

Ahmad (Masih) Bahmani is a Computer Science MSc student at Bishop’s University in Sherbrooke, QC, Canada. With a strong background in computer engineering from Iran University of Science and Technology and extensive research experience in financial market prediction and algorithmic trading, he brings expertise in deep learning, time-series modeling, and software development. Ahmad’s current project focuses on identifying the most reliable predictors of early mortality using custom deep learning models applied to the UK Biobank, with emphasis on lifestyle and neuroimaging markers. He is passionate about leveraging AI for health, longevity, and human well-being.

Jerry Lau

Jerry received his Bachelor's of Computer Science (with Distinction) from Bishops University in 2024. He is in the final year of his Masters at Bishop's investigating the alpha wave correlation to the grey matter density using MRI and EEG. He is also a recipient of the Arbour Foundation Scholarship.

Shishir Zaman

Shishir Zaman (b. July 8, 1996) is an MSc candidate in Computer Science at Bishop’s University, Canada, with a background in CSE from East West University, Bangladesh. His academic and professional journey spans software engineering at BJIT Limited, teaching at East West University, and publishing research in deep learning for time-series forecasting. Shishir’s current project leverages deep learning to predict early mortality within the UK Biobank, focusing on cortical gray matter degradation and its interplay with lifestyle factors. Passionate about applying AI to human well-being, he combines technical expertise with a strong drive for impactful research.

Mohsen Ghorbanifar

Mohsen Ghorbanifar is a seasoned software engineer and solution architect with over a decade of experience in telecommunications and enterprise software, including 12 years at Huawei. Skilled in Linux/Unix systems, large-scale service delivery, and software infrastructure, he has led projects spanning VAS/BSS platforms, cloud integration, and high-availability systems. Currently pursuing an MSc in Computer Science at Bishop’s University, Mohsen is developing cutting-edge medical imaging pipelines in Unity’s High Definition Render Pipeline (HDRP) to aid clinicians and researchers in diagnosis and discovery. His work bridges advanced visualization, biomedical imaging, and clinical impact, reflecting his passion for innovation in health technology.
